AGAINST RADIO-RESISTANT AND INOPERABLE TUMORS › CNAO Expansion Project › Gianluca Vago

Thanks to the significant contribution of the Italian Ministry of Health and the important support of the Lombardy Region, CNAO will become the only Hadrontherapy Center in the world with protons, carbon ions, other ionic species and BNCT.

The new area, intended not only for therapeutic activity but also for research, will be developed on two floors, totaling about 4,000 square meters, and will include:

an additional proton accelerator connected to a new treatment room with a rotating head (gantry), which allows the beam to hit the tumor from multiple directions;
a compact particle accelerator for neutron production, aimed at an experimental therapy for complex tumors, Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (BNCT);
two rooms for BNCT, one for treatment and one for research;
new spaces related to patient reception, including a 250-square-meter waiting room;
new spaces dedicated to preparation for Hadrontherapy treatments;
new laboratories for research activities.

The project has been made possible thanks to a significant contribution from the Italian Ministry of Health Art. 1 paragraph 559 of Law 145/2018, the important support of the Lombardy Region within the Research and Innovation call hub, the transfer by University of Pavia of some of its land, necessary to complete the access roadway to CNAO, and the support of Municipality of Pavia, which recognized the strategic nature of the intervention for increasing the supply of health and scientific research services.
