Mauro is 57 years old, he is from Genoa and he has worked in Greece for 10 years as director of an international navigation company and he is now honorary Consul of Italy in Pireo.
In 2011 Mauro felt a strong pain in his back and he was visited in Greece. The diagnosis was a malignant tumor: a chordoma of sacrum. He came back to Italy for a surgical intervention. The operation was successful but the tumor can’t be completely removed: if surgeons operated on the deepest part of the tumor, Mauro would have never been able to walk again.
The doctors explain him that he would need a treatment of hadrontherapy for destroying the remaining cancer cells.
Mauro looks for a centre where he could be treated. He makes contact, for example, with Boston where the therapy would have a cost of 200 thousands Euro. However the Genoa’s ASL advises him of the existence of a new centre in Italy, Cnao in Pavia, where he could be treated with hadrontherapy. Mauro decides to go there.
From May to July 2012 Mauro submitted to 5 sessions oh hadrontherapy for week which have been successful. The tumor has been defeated as it evidenced in the periodic visits of inspection carried out until now at CNAO.
Mauro comes back to his activities, especially tennis and sailing.
He was honored with “Commander of the order of Italy’s star” by Giorgio Napolitano.
Mauro says: ”At CNAO I met very professional people with technical skills from both psychological and human point of you. In CNAO I never felt alone. I always had someone close, doctors or nurses. I was followed from the beginning to the end of the treatment."
