Matilde is 24 years old, she is from from One', in the province of Treviso.
A little more than one year ago she finds out to have a malignant tumor (adeno-cystic carcinoma in the parotid gland, the largest of the salivary glands located beneath the cheek roughly at the height of the ear.
She undergoes successful surgery in Padua but the disease cannot be removed completely. Several cancer microcells, inoperable, remain active even in very sensitive points, such as the facial nerve. The scalpel must stop also to avoid the risk of permanent damages to her face.
On the advice of doctors in Padova Matilde addresses the Oncological Reference Center of Aviano. At first the most accredited hypothesis is a cycle of chemotherapy in association with radiotherapy. But the oncologist who follows Matilde in Aviano decides to put her in touch with CNAO, the National Center of Oncological Hadrontherapy, where tumors like Matilde's one are treated with particle beams that hit selectively the ill tissues, sparing the healthy ones.
Matilde arrives at CNAO for the first time in August last year for the preliminary visits. In November she begins the treatment which consists in16 hadrontherapy sessions, of approximately 30 minutes each. For a month or so Matilde moves to Lombardy, accompanied by her brother, first in Milan and later in Pavia. In December the therapies end and the treatment is successful.
The periodic check-ups which Matilde makes at CNAO show that the cancer has been stopped. Today Matilde is well and, after working for several years as a saleswoman, she is preparing to open, together with her brother, a bar-restaurant of her own in Bassano del Grappa.
