The cervico-cephalic district can be the site of several neoplasias with different histology. Our Centre offers treatment of histologically. Our Centre offers treatment of histologically malignant tumours such as locally advanced spinocellular tumours, bone sarcomas and soft tissue, and salivary gland tumours.
This type of neoplasias are often treated with the integration of various methods such as surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy.
The main objective of modern radiotherapy is to treat the tumour representing our target, preserving not targeted healthy tissue as much as possible.
In tumours of the cervical-cephalic district this goal is particularly important because treatment volumes are generally large and complex. Hence, the presence of side effects, especially when radiation is associated with the concomitant chemo-radiation.
Thanks to their physical characteristics, the charged particles such as hadrons offer an obvious advantage, depositing all their energy accurately on the tumour with considerably lower dose to normal tissues, allowing to increase the dose to the tumour improving cure possibilities, without increasing side effects.
By preserving those critical structures that, if critically damaged, bring a strongly negative impact on the patients' quality of life (salivary glands, muscles joint, jaw articulation time, the pharyngeal constriction muscles etc).
What tumours are treated:
  • Spinocellular carcinomas
  • Adenoideocistic carcinomas
  • Adenocarcinomas
  • Head and neck district sarcomas
  • Skull base chordomas
  • Chondrosarcomas of the skull base
What tumour sites are treated:
  • Nasopharynx
  • Oropharynx: tonsils, base of the tongue, soft palate
  • Hypopharynx
  • The Parotid gland
  • Nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses
  • Skull base
  • Orbit
What advantages:
  • Reducing exposure to radiation of salivary glands
  • Reducing exposure to radiation for the brainstem and other sensitive brain structures
  • Reducing exposure to radiation for the spinal cord
  • Reducing risk of effects on swallowing
  • Reducing risk of decreased salivation (xerostomia)
  • Reducing risk of neurological damage
